For one weekend every April, the Marriot Denver Tech Center is taken over by Starfleet officers, Stormtroopers, Browncoats and Pirates. This year there was a new fandom dominating the convention. Whovians travelled through time and space to attend Starfest2012 and made sure not to forget their Sonic Screwdriver.

As a cult hit in America, Doctor Who has been a British television staple since 1963 and has taken fans through eleven incarnations of The Doctor. Viewers tune in to travel with The Doctor in his TARDIS to save planets and their inhabitants from the evils of the universe. The newest Doctor, Matt Smith, has brought a refreshing take on the character and with this a new resurgence in American Doctor Who fandom.

In Denver, the number of Doctor Who fans has grown exponentially over the past few years. While in previous years Whovians could be seen walking around Starfest sporadically, in 2012 they became a dominate force throughout the convention. There were even amazing Doctor Who costumes in the annual contest including Davros, Rose, K-9, Daleks, Bannakaffalatta and of course The Doctor.

Steven Moffat, writer of many other British Television hits such as Coupling and Sherlock, recently completed his second season as show runner for Doctor Who. Moffat’s complex storylines have expanded the fan’s journey through intricate story arcs and compelling cliffhangers. Because of the amazing writing and new vision of the doctor, many American science fiction fans have become enamored with the show and cannot wait to find out where the seventh series will takes us this fall.
