Whovians around the world are watching the Olympic Opening Ceremonies hoping that “Doctor Who” will be included. Held in London, the 2012 Summer Olympics have been eagerly awaited. Many British pop culture icons were included such as Benedict Cumberbatch, JK Rowling, Rowan Atkinson and even Mary Poppins. Fans were exuberant when, during the musical montage, there was distinctively the TARDIS sound included.
“Doctor Who” has had multiple tie-ins with the Olympic Ceremonies both in the show itself and during the actual event. In the episode “Fear Her”, David Tennant’s doctor is the final torchbearer after saving the world once again from an impending evil. The torch was also featured in the winning mini episode that was aired recently called “Good as Gold”. Matt Smith was chosen as a torchbearer in May 2012. He carried the torch from Cardiff, the modern home of “Doctor Who”, on its way to the coastal city of Swansea.
The Olympic Opening Ceremonies will not air on American television until this evening. Please tune in to NBC tonight to share this momentous occasion with the world.
