Japanese animation fans congregated this weekend in Denver for the 16th Nan Desu Kan, or NDK. Fans in the thousands partake in fashion boutiques, artist panels and cosplay for three days of anime celebration. What many attendees did not expect to see was “Doctor Who”, everywhere. Throughout Artist’s Alley, the dealer’s room and cosplay participants, “Doctor Who” has become a major force within the convention.
Artist’s Alley is full of booths highlighting artists and their amazing work. Within this area, freelance illustrator Kevin Yan is displaying many beautiful works of art. Among his display are two pieces featuring “Doctor Who”; one highlighting the Tenth Doctor besides the TARDIS while the other depicts the Eleventh Doctor along with some of his infamous villains.
Within the walls of the dealer’s room lie many vendors selling anything an anime fan could be looking for. Among these sellers are multiple t-shirt shops displaying “Doctor Who” shirts. These include two baseball type shirts honoring the last two doctors along with their famous quotes. In addition to t-shirts, one shop is selling an infant shirt proudly displaying “Stormaggedon: Dark Lord of All”.
While most cosplayers at the convention are proudly displaying their anime fandom, “Doctor Who” fans came out in full force. Among the amazing costumes are more than ten doctors, a weeping angel, The Master, a TARDIS and even an homage to Sylvester McCoy’s doctor. In addition to full costumes, a plethora of “Doctor Who” t-shirts can be seen on attendees wandering around the convention.
