During this tense election many voters are still undecided as to how they are going to vote in November. Weighing the issues can sometimes leave one feeling even more lost. While a majority of American voters believe some of what each candidate is saying, many do not believe one candidate’s entire platform. Looking at their personal lives and previous experience, which candidate can relate with the geek population? Is President Barack Obama or Governor Mitt Romney a bigger geek?
Movies
A person’s preference in movies can shine a light on their true personality. Mitt Romney has discussed his love for a couple different movies. While for many years, Romney stated that his favorite movie was “Raiders of the Lost Ark”, recently he has begun leaning towards “O Brother Where Art Thou”. Barack Obama has remained firm on the fact that his favorite movies are “The Godfather” and “The Godfather: Part 2”. However, he has stated in many interviews that his love does not extend to the third installment. He also is a fan of the “Star Wars” movies.
Television
Obama’s love for Star Trek cannot be denied. Pictures have surfaced of him with Nichelle Nichols, who portrayed Lieutenant Uhura, and even of Obama giving a Vulcan salute. He also cannot miss “Homeland” and has expressed his admiration for “The Wire”. Romney on the other hand leans towards comedy. He lists “Modern Family” and “30 Rock” as his favorite television shows.
Books
In a Fox News interview in 2007, Romney stated that his favorite book is “Battlefield Earth” by L Ron Hubbard. He has recently pointed out that he likes the “Twilight” series, which he read after seeing his granddaughter enjoying the books. Obama’s favorite book is “Moby Dick” by Herman Melville.
Other Areas
As promised, Barack Obama instituted a Chief Technology Officer once he was in office. This new office not only is tasked with items such as cutting costs and keeping America technologically secure, the CTO is also responsible for increasing access to broadband services for all Americans. In addition, Obama is known to be an Apple fan and is often seen with his iPad. Mitt Romney has not yet had the chance to improve the nation’s technology infrastructure; however he is a spreadsheet and finance geek. As a successful business man, he has been able to utilize his ability to manage financial spreadsheets to equate into many business ventures.
While it is truly difficult to say which candidate is a bigger geek, it is comforting to know that they do appreciate pop culture fandom. One could make an argument for either candidate since Barack Obama is a pop culture geek and Mitt Romney is a financial geek. No matter who wins this November, geekdom will be represented in The White House.
