Mile Hi Con 44 set to begin this weekend in Denver

As Colorado’s longest running Science Fiction Convention and Fantasy Literature Convention, Mile Hi Con is a place for fans of the genre to celebrate the amazing stories an authors they have come to love. Beginning in 1969 as OctoCon, attendees have been taking part in the annual event for generations. This year’s convention is set to be an amazing time with activities, video screenings, authors and even cosplay events.

The Guest of Honor is Author Cherie Priest. Cherie has been nominated for a Nebula and Hugo award, and had been the recipient of a PBNA Award in addition to winning a Best Science Fiction Novel Locus Award. Known for her previous novels such as “Ganyemede”, “Dreadnought”, “Hellbent” and “Fort Freak”, she has two Steampunk novels set to be released in 2012 and 2013. Other amazing authors attending this year’s event include CJ Henderson, Stephen Hickman, Stephen Graham Jones and Steven Burst.

One of the highlights of the annual event is the Masquerade costume contest. Fans of Sci FI and Fanatasy genres participate in this event to display not only their fandom but also their amazing talent. This year’s Masquarade will take place on Saturday evening.

This year’s schedule of events is nothing short of spectacular. From costuming panels such as ‘Costuming Basics’ to video screenings for such movies as “Van Helsing” and “Heavy Metal” there is something for everyone. There is even an Anime Video Room screening programs such as “Trigun: Badlands Rumble” and “Starship Troopers: Invasion”. On Saturday there is a ‘Bat’leth Tournament’ and Star Trek fans can attend ‘Klingon Tribble Hockey’ on Sunday.

Once again this year, the Avistrum Academy of Sorcery will be holding classes all weekend long for any Muggle or Magician interested. Avistrum activities include a ‘Sorting Ceremony’ and classes on Herbology, Charms, Dueling, and even Defense Against the Dark Arts. There is a limit of 100 students that can attend these events, and an additional fee to participate. Please see the website for more information.

The convention is taking place at the Hyatt Regency Hotel Denver Tech Center from October 19-21, 2012. Registration prices are $46.00 for all three days, $18.00 for Friday only, $22.00 for Saturday only and $21.00 for Sunday only. Children under 12 are half price. Registration will be located in the 2nd floor lobby and will open at 1:00 PM on Friday.
