In a shocking turn of events on Tuesday, Disney announced that they will be purchasing Lucasfilm for $4 billion and also that they will be releasing “Star Wars: Episode VII” in 2015. In a statement released today, George Lucas said, “For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next. It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers.”
Many “Star Wars” fans have been arguing if “Episode VII” would ever be made. While many fans are unsure if they are excited about this announcement or worried, it does bring new life back into the franchise. After Disney’s recent purchase of the Marvelfranchise, many fans were worried that their beloved characters would become too child friendly. After the recent Marvel releases, many have changed their mind and are looking forward to future projects.
Does this mean that the “Star Wars” television series can finally become a reality? Lucasfilm has stated that they have the television series all laid out, however the special effects required would be too expensive to make for the small screen with today’s technology. With the new infusion of capital from Disney, could this project come to the small screen sooner than was hoped? Time will tell if one should look forward to this or not.
